Trip Report - Summer Bash 2009

The summer bash this year took place in North Yorkshire at Flamingoland to co-incide with the opening of their brand new coaster 'Mumbo Jumbo' built by S&S Power. The day started with us meeting up at the entrance to the park from 09:30. Once there we were given a wristband which was needed for the end of day ERS. We were also given an entrance ticket and a voucher for £7 off entry to Lightwater Valley. We then entered the park and gathered for a group photo. It was great to see so many members on their first club trip. image

We then all headed over to Velocity, their Vekoma Motorbike Coaster for a ride takeover before exploring the park's other rides. Some members went on Splash Battle and got absolutely soaked! but it was such a nice day it wouldn't take long to dry out! Flip Flop was next but wasn't operating properly. The water jets were extreme to say the least and were soaking every rider. No-one was detered from this and enjoyed the unique experience and got totally soaked! It was great to watch and hearing them scream! Their new ride Mumbo Jumbo was testing ahead of the day's opening. We enjoyed more of the park's ride before getting some lunch. A number of members went to the park's Metropolis Restaurant for a great meal proving that Theme Park food is getting better and better. After this we walked over to see the opening ceremony of Mumbo Jumbo and the ride make the Guinness Book of World Records as the Steepest Roller Coaster. Then at very short notice Nev was asked by the park to get 8 RCCGB members together for one of the first VIP rides. If you were lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time you were picked for this. We then went into the ride for this Record Breaking event. The parks owner Gordon Gibb was presented with the official certificate from The Guinness Book of World Records. The local press and representatives from other clubs and Galaxy FM competition winners made up the rest of the VIP rides before the ride was then opened to the public at 15:30. Most of our club members then got their first taste of this record breaking coaster. image After this we had more time to check out the park's other rides including Kumali & their Corkscrew which was very smooth. As it was such a lovely day the park remained open to the public till 19:00. Then we had our ERS on the record breaking coaster and broke some records ourself! Nev was trying to get as many rides for us as possible so was ensuring every car had every seat filled. The car I was in had a lot of heavy people and tripped the ride as it went through the sensor too fast! It was a great ride and great ERS, Well done Flamingoland!

A number of members took up the voucher offer for Lightwater Valley and met up at the entrance just before 10:00 on the Sunday before heading into the park. The first ride of the day for a lot of members was on The Sewer Rat as they are only operating this ride with 2 cars so the queues would be very long. It was a great indoor ride in the dark. Then we headed over to The Ultimate for a ride experience. The first part of the ride is best experienced in the back of the train but it is the calm before the storm as it doesn't matter where you are seated for the second part of the ride, it's absolutely extreme. I'm just pleased I never experienced this ride with the overhead restraints! We then did the rest of the park's rides including The Twister, their Reverchon Spinning Mouse. We had 2 large members sat at either end of the car and one smaller member on the left side of the car. We were then treated to one of the most extreme spinning experiences ever, the most I have ever spun on a spinning mouse. A number of members went just out of the park into their Granary Restaurant & Coffee Shop for a Sunday Carvery before heading back into the park to do the remaining rides. Their new ride for 2009 is The Wild River Rapids and some of our members went on this near the end of the day. They thought they were getting off lightly until the end of the ride when a wave went right over soaking everyone! Some members went on The Swan Lake Pedal Boats. Four 'Heavy' members went on one boat and managed to ground it for a time, it was fun! We were there until 18:00 when the park closed. A great summer bash weekend was had by all and great summer weather went with it. Let's hope the great weather continues for Oakwood!!
