Trip Report - MegaGLOWMania 2009
Members far and wide converged on the Wales county of Pembrokeshire for the annual MegaGLOWMania event at Oakwood. A number of members took up the option of camping on site and began arriving early on Friday afternoon. This year the weather was kind to us. Having arrived and settled at Camp Oakwood it was off to the park's Canaston Bowl for a couple of relaxing drinks after the long drive, 7 hours in my case. We then headed back into the park for some camp food and more beverages.
What we saw at the entrance to the park was so amusing. A number of members arrived later in the day and as the park now closes at 6PM they were stuck at the entrance as the gate was locked! They had been waiting for nearly half an hour. We managed to get them into the park by lifting one of the gates off it's hinges. Park security arrived soon after and unlocked the gate for remaining members who hadn't yet arrived. So it was off to the camp and setting up the camp stove.
On the menu were burgers, sausages, bacon and eggs and even vegetarian sausages for our vegetarian member. We had a great chat, a few drinks and were well fed and watered before heading into our tents for a good nights sleep before the main event on Saturday.
Up early on Saturday the stove was on again, this time for a good cuppa before heading over to the entrance and meeting up with the remaining members who roughed it in a B&B! There were quite a few members on their first trip to Oakwood. The day started with an hour's ERS on their great woodie, Megafobia, there wasn't an empty train going out of the station. This was followed by a take-over on Speed: No Limits before heading over to the restaurant for some breakfast.
We then had free time go around the park in our groups and check out their remaining rides. Members took up the offer of 3 for 2 on Vertigo, the park's Skycoaster, Ryan took a ride on Brer Rabbit's Burrow while Dan took a wet ride on The Waterfall. He came off dry so we persuaded him to have a couple of other goes until he came off and went in the drink!! 
Other members braved Hydro and got soaked to the skin while others had a leisurely trip on the boating lake. The park closed to everyone at 6PM so it was off to Canaston Bowl for our Bowling & Crystal Maze session before heading back into the park for our late night glow in the dark ERS on Megafobia. This time there were 2 trains running giving everyone plenty of rides. Nev brought his car into the park and after the ERS members walked in front of his car preventing him from an early exit! It was off to the B&B's or in my case the camp
for some more drinks and some more food. Although slightly chilly on the night the weather held out and the camp was a great success compared to the mud bath of last year!On Sunday members did their own thing, some decided on taking up the club's special offer price for a second day in the park while others went to the outdoor activity centre Heatherton's for some challenges on the 50mph Go Karts. There were 12 of us taking part so there were 2 races of 6 to get us used to the cars before splitting up into 3 groups of 4 for the challenges. The winners of each heat and the best 3rd place got into the final race. The staff at Heatherton's made it a bit different for us by making the final race go round the track in the opposite direction. Nev was the winner of the event but we all enjoyed taking part. There's plenty to do at Heatherton's so some of the members enjoyed their other activites like archery while I headed off to Cardiff for some Lunch at The Hard Rock Cafe before the long journey home. It was a great trip as usual with the weather on our side too. The members on their first Oakwood trip had a great experience at Wales's Premier Theme Park. Loopathon next, can't wait!
